Two Bodies a Skilled Merc, and a Powerful Terrorist

Rise of the Phoenix Dameon Gibbs Corey Ballard 9781312503939 Books

Rise of the Phoenix is a fairly standard action thriller that, while it has issues, gets a lot of things right. The action is what this book gets right. Once you get past the setup and introduction, which I will address in a moment, the action is high paced. For the lovers of adrenaline fueled thriller action, Gibbs hits the right marks. The main characters are also well developed, but as individuals and with their interaction with each other.

I do have two issues with the book, one in setup and the other in editing. The main characters don’t get introduced until almost fifteen percent of the way through the book. The prologue, while it does a good job of setting up the tension, spends a lot of time on characters that never make it out of the first couple of chapters. I am fairly certain that, if read as an omnibus and not as individual pieces, this would probably not be an issue.

My other issue is in the editing of the book. Fairly regularly the book jumps between past and present tense and back again. It is actually fairly distracting. Hopefully the author is working on these issues and plans to release and updated edition.

If you read this book seeing it as act one of a larger book, then it is a decent read. If you are looking for a complete book that works on its own, Rise of the Phoenix will leave you a bit disappointed.

Rise of the Phoenix Dameon Gibbs Corey Ballard 9781312503939 Books Reviews

This was an exciting book! The whole book I was able to picture the story as an upcoming action movie, full of action scenes and suspense. There was mystery, suspense, action...a good read. Pick it up, enjoy!
Action packed thriller that's sure to keep you on your toes and wanting more. Chase action is enough to make this an agreeable read and enjoyable for any reader. Looking forward to Act II
A thriller to beat the best of them. Action packed with a cast of characters each distinct and interesting in his own way which is tricky to pull off when you're dealing with a group of special ops soldiers.
Suspense rolls off the page, and unlike many books, its isn't clear who is going to survive and who isn't. I particularly enjoyed the seemingly mild mannered, child friendly Edge who is a deadly killer, and the analyst Tucker who has the same reaction to being in a life or death situation as most of us would. Can't wait for the sequel to see how this one pans out.
I am giving Rise of the Phoenix five stars, but to do so I am ignoring a number of editorial issues that the authors are aware of and I assume will be fixing. The story takes the reader to the everglades in Florida and in a long flashback, to the deserts of Iraq. The authors have done an excellent job of developing the main characters including using the flashback. The action is well written and there is lots of it. A great book for an adrenaline junky. I am looking forward to reading Act 2. I do wish that books didn't end in the way this one does as it does leave you hanging, but it has done what it is supposed to do, make me want more.
Given the age we live in, terrorists are the enemy of everyone. Technology has evolved to the point where one device, one piece of technology, can destroy countless lives and wreak untold destruction for the survivors to contend with.

Gibbs story starts simply enough. A young business man nervous about his first big deal. Something we can relate to. Most of us aren't mercenaries, CIA operatives and we certainly aren't terrorists.

All of these characters are woven together in a fast paced story filled with tension, intrigue and plenty of twists as disaster and the need to prevent future disasters unfold.
In Act One, the readers will be swept into a fast-paced cat and mouse game of suspense. The author paints vivid true-to-life scenes that are worthy of the big screen. CIA Analyst, Tucker and Delta Force Op Sft, Edge are the stars of the story. They are both different in every way, but both brilliant in what they do, and they both have one goal in common. They plan on bringing down a mysterious organization that wants to destroy America. These men won't be defeated without giving it their best.

I truly loved Edge and his crew. They reminded me of the A-Team and the Losers—both favorites of this reader. I especially love their sense of humor in the midst of danger, and the way they interact with each other. Their banter was never forced, giving you the sense that these guys have been together for a long time, and they work so well as one deadly unit. All of the characters are three dimensional, making them interesting, and making you care what happens to them. You'll definitely root for Tucker and Edge, and will anxiously look forward to Rise of the Phoenix, Act II.
This is a roller coaster of a read. From its Prologue to the main story, I found myself hooked. This story is written on a backdrop of terrorism and the people who have been charged to stop what is about to happen.

The main protagonists of the piece were very well written; in fact all the characters of this piece of work were well represented by the author, who looked like he had taken a significant amount of time to research his material thoroughly before putting pen to paper.

The prologue took a different turn to the rest of the story, but I have figured by the way Rise of the Phoenix ended, that that part of the story will come to fruition in the next book.

Once I became fully invested in this story, it was difficult for me to put it down. To say it was a page turner would be an understatement.

I did have my favourite characters in the story, namely Tucker and Edge, Tucker being the big girls blouse and Edge being the protector, of sorts. I liked the little bit of back story, set back during the war in Iraq, where Tucker and Edge and his team first interact with each other.

If you like books that are intelligent and well written, look no further than Rise of the Phoenix. I highly recommend this read to anyone who likes a good Thriller, if that is what you would call it. I suppose it has a mixture of thriller and action undertones. I don’t usually read books of this genre, but I loved every minute of this fast paced story, and can’t wait for the follow up.
